Greene Light Stage is the co-producer of Billy Elliot the Musical with Working Title Films and Universal Stage Productions. Sally Greene, as one of the original producers, played a role in bringing together the creative forces from the original film: director Stephen Daldry and writer Lee Hall, who with Elton John wrote the lyrics and music for the stage production.

The show opened in 2005 at the Victoria Palace, and continued to run for 11 years. In 2008 the show transferred to Broadway where it garnered ten Tony awards including Best Musical, a record-breaking feat for a British musical. It has also had award winning runs in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia.

Building on the success of the Broadway show, in April 2010, the first US tour opened to critical acclaim in Chicago, followed by an opening in Toronto. A second US Tour began in Durham, North Carolina in the autumn of 2010. The musical is also being licensed to other territories across the world including South Korea, Japan and Germany.

Unlike any other musical, the production has a rotating cast of young performers with the show being lead by the boy who plays the lead role of Billy. This means there is a rigorous training and preparation programme so the young performers have the skills to lead the show. As the director Stephen Daldry says about playing Billy in the musical: `it's like performing Hamlet while running a marathon!'

“Billy Elliot The Musical has been probably one of the most enjoyable things I’ve ever done in my life. It’s certainly been one of the most successful and one of the most rewarding.”

- SIR ELTON JOHN
